Chester County Opening Two Emergency Shelters Sunday

EXTON PA – Two emergency shelters for Chester County residents – including those in Phoenixville, Spring City and surrounding municipalities within the county – who are imperiled by Hurricane Sandy will open Sunday (Oct. 28, 2012) at 7 p.m. in Exton and Avondale, county emergency management officials said Saturday (Oct. 27) in a press release.

Those affected by the coming storm are being encouraged to stay with family or friends outside the area but if that’s not an option, they added, shelters will be made available in cooperation with the American Red Cross.

The shelters are located at Lionville Middle School, 550 West Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Exton, and Avon Grove High School, 257 State Rd., Avondale. Basic meals and cots for sleeping will be provided. The shelters also will be pet-friendly, with an area designated for pets away from other visitors.

The county recommends shelter guests bring the following items for their families:

  • Snacks or comfort food;
  • Any special dietary foods;
  • Bedding, pillows, blankets;
  • Extra clothing;
  • Medications and medical supplies;
  • Personal care items;
  • Diapers, infant and elderly/disabled necessities; and
  • Time occupiers such as books, magazines, games or cards.

And for their pets:

  • Any medications;
  • Medical and vaccination records;
  • Collar, leash and carrier; and
  • Food.
