It’s the second state championship win for Pottsgrove within seven days
HERSHEY PA – Pottsgrove High School kept up its winning ways Saturday (Nov. 10, 2012) at Hershey Park Stadium, as the Falcons marching band captured first place in the American A Division during the 53rd annual Marching Band Grand Championships of the Pennsylvania Cavalcade of Bands.
Cavalcade’s Grand Championships have grown over more than five decades to become one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious marching band events. Its weekend spectacular (Nov. 10 and 11) at two separate venues in Hershey and Millersville PA involved more than 89 high school bands an about 6,000 performers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware, according to its officials.
- Few were more impressive than Pottsgrove’s well-drilled students, fans said. They blared the team’s triumph all over Twitter, Facebook and other social media (below).
- Band director Victor Holladay offered his own message of congratulations to all involved (at bottom).
Those at the event reported the Falcons executed their more than 8-minute weather-themed show almost flawlessly. The band scored highest in judges’ points, 89.95, and also won high visual, high effect and high music honors, as well as best overall performance. Their closest competitor of nine was two full points behind them, and others trailed by up to 11 points.

The band’s win marks the second time in seven days that Pottsgrove has been named as state championship titlists. The Falcon boys cross-country team last week (Nov. 3) won the 2012 PIAA Class AA Cross Country Championships, also at Hershey. And the Pottsgrove football team, which already captured first place in the PAC-10 (Pioneer Athletic Conference), won its initial playoff game Friday (Nov. 9) against Strath Haven, and seems destined for bigger things too, fans boasted.
Band director Victor Holladay added these thoughts in an e-mail distributed Sunday (Nov. 11):
Congratulations to the Pottsgrove HS Falcon Marching Band. Saturday the band competed in the Cavalcade of Bands Championships in Hershey, PA and was crowned the 2012 American Conference A Division Champions. This is the 2nd Championship the band has won in 6 years. In addition to their first place finish, they received awards for High Music, High Visual, and High Overall Effect.
The band is thankful for the incredibly supportive school district, administrators, Music League and community who give the marching band so much. Without their support, it would be impossible for them to take the field each year. The band is proud to represent Pottsgrove.
Congratulations once again to the Marching Band. All of your hard work has paid off!”
