SANATOGA PA – Virginia Smith, the mother-in-law of Lower Pottsgrove Township Treasurer and Tax Collector Jennifer Marsteller, was appointed Thursday night (Feb. 21, 2013) by the Board of Commissioners as Marsteller’s deputy through Dec. 31.
At least one commissioner, Vice President Bruce Foltz, said he knows Smith personally and has worked with her in the past. He and his board colleagues unanimously agreed with her selection.
Marsteller earlier this month proposed Smith’s appointment to cover the treasurer’s potential absence during the peak of the township tax season in June, when she expects to be out of town for about three days.
The appointment empowers Smith to serve in Marsteller’s stead and fulfill her duties at the tax collector’s office, 1954 E. High St. Smith’s performance is covered by a $100,000 bond.
Solicitor R. Kurtz Holloway again advised commissioners they had the legal authority to make the appointment so long as it expired at year’s end, when Marsteller concludes her current term as an elected official.
