POTTSTOWN PA – Employees at all Journal Register Co. newspapers, including The (Pottstown PA) Mercury, The (Boyertown PA) Community Connection, The Boyertown Times, The (Lansdale PA) Reporter and The (Norristown PA) Times Herald, recently were notified their jobs would be terminated, but “this does not mean there will be changes in the operation or staffing” of the papers, The Reporter stated. The notices were said to be distributed as part of a bankruptcy proceeding.

Papers everywhere are struggling against the advent of the internet and online news reporting. Those that survive will be those that manage to convert operations to a hybrid of print and net presence. Sanatoga Post is an example of the future but a solid revenue stream is needed in order to allow writing, reporting, and photo journalism to flourish.
One possibility is a small subscription fee, as well a add presence and the ability to print coupons for local business’s that would also encourage them to advertise on line. Difficulties include the data versions of weekly sale flyers. The speed with which one can thumb a paper and get to items of interest remains.
Let’s hope we aren’t seeing the demise of print newspaper products in our area.
