SANATOGA PA – There are, apparently, plenty of qualified law enforcement officer candidates who would love the opportunity to think of the Lower Pottsgrove Police Department as their employer.
More than 90 applicants submitted their paperwork by Friday afternoon (March 15, 2013) to be considered by the township’s Civil Service Commission for a job on the force, Police Chief Michael Foltz reported Monday (March 18). The commission is building a list of candidates for the eventuality that, some time in the future, the department will hire a new or replacement officer.
Applications were available for only 19 business days, since Feb. 19, and had to be accompanied by a $35 fee. That means the responses streamed in at an average rate of about five per day. And the township’s requirements were stringent:
- Applicants must be age 18 or older, be a United States citizen, and hold at least a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate that is a diploma-equivalent;
- They must be Pennsylvania-licensed drivers;
- They must be able to successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological, physical agility and polygraph examinations. Completion of a thorough background investigation also is required; and
- They also must have completed and passed Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission Act 120 police certification; or be enrolled in a training course at the time they apply, with the understanding that they cannot be considered eligible for appointment unless they have completed and passed the course.
For the successful candidate, the starting salary ranges from $47,500 to $60,000, and full benefits are provided.
Any candidate is still some distance away from being chosen, however. All must next face and successfully pass the township Civil Service exam for the position. It is scheduled to be administered Saturday (March 23).
