SANATOGA PA – The value of real estate parcels that make up the well-kept fairways, gentle greens and tricky sand traps at Brookside Country Club, 850 N. Adams St., isn’t what it once was, appraisal experts and a court agree, so Lower Pottsgrove Township and the Pottsgrove School District will credit its owners for being overtaxed.
The district Board of Education, during an earlier meeting, and the township Board of Commissioners on Thursday (Oct. 24, 2013) agreed to accept property reassessments sought by the country club and The Hill School, which together own land within township and district borders that comprise the 18-hole golf course.
Brookside’s parcels had been assessed at a value of $677,740, township Solicitor R. Kurtz Holloway reported; it was lowered to $451,420. The Hill School’s land for the country club had been assessed at $330,020; it was lowered to $220,020.
Brookside and The Hill initially appealed their assessments during 2011, which at the time were opposed by the school district; it receives the majority of taxes levied on real property. The district lost its case in a January 2012 Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas decision, and the parties have been negotiating since over what final numbers would be, Holloway said.
The township usually does not participate in, but is regularly updated about, such cases, he added, because its share of the taxes received is comparatively small.
Under the agreement, Brookside won a township credit for $1,248 in pre-paid taxes, and a credit of $16,473 from the district. The Hill gets a township credit of $606, and district credit of $8,006.
The township had an earlier opportunity to accept the settlement, but at the suggestion of Commissioner Stephen Klotz waited until the district signed its agreement.
