SANATOGA PA – The attempted theft of “a large amount of merchandise” from the K-Mart retail store at 2200 E. High St. in Sanatoga was thwarted Friday (Dec. 20, 2013) by Lower Pottsgrove police, who apprehended a suspect during a foot chase after he fled the store, the township department reported.
Donetus U. Gunn, 41, who police said was homeless and without a permanent address, currently is being held in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville in lieu of $15,000 cash bail. He awaits a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 3 (2014; Friday) on charges of misdemeanor retail theft, resisting arrest, and public drunkenness, Ofc. Matthew Meitzler said.
Police were called to the store at about 3 p.m. by K-Mart loss prevention and security workers as they said they were chasing the man later identified as Gunn. They alleged he took items totaling $171 and left without paying.
Meitzler and department Chief Michael Foltz arrived and, during a search, found Gunn walking in the area of Heritage Drive and Brookview Lane. He took off again, according to Meitzler, when he spotted the police. He was captured and arrested after a second chase.
Police allege Gunn also was under the influence of a controlled substance. Other charges may be pending, Meitzler’s report indicated.
