POTTSTOWN PA – The smartphone and the tablet – the two do-everything devices of modern life, were required personal equipment Friday and Saturday night (Feb. 7-8, 2014) during the Someone Special dances conducted by the Lower Pottsgrove Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

Parents had ‘em, primarily to take photos of their well dressed youngsters at the big Valentine-themed social gatherings. Kids had ‘em, primarily to text each other on the dance floor … even though most of those doing the communicating were no more than 15 feet apart at any time. PTA members had ‘em, primarily to keep abreast of the activity and its needs via instant messaging.

And when parents couldn’t take photos of themselves and their children together in their finery – full-length selfies can be difficult to position – PTA members (above) stepped in as impromptu photographers themselves, using the parents’ phones. The line for photo souvenirs stretched out onto the dance floor to the middle of the school gym.

About the only thing the devices didn’t do was bake treats or serve up refreshments (below). The PTA did that too.
