Area Cub Scouts Prepare For Pinewood Derby Races

PENNSBURG PA – Cub Scouts in packs across the Greater Pottstown area have spent weeks whittling, shaping, sanding and testing the gravity-powered vehicles known as “Pinewood Derby” cars. They’ll race them to the finish line against other local scouts next Saturday (April 5, 2014) beginning at 9:30 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1244 Saint Paul’s Church Rd.

Area Cub Scouts Prepare For Pinewood Derby RacesThe race cars, usually no bigger than a scout’s hand, run down specially built tracks to determine which is the speediest. All are built from the same materials, and to the same dimensional and weight specifications for fairness. Aerodynamic sleekness imbued by the scouts (with, maybe, help from a parent or two) is needed to help win the day.

Check-in for the regional event starts at 8:30 a.m. Among the competitors will be members of Cub Scout Pack 146 of Pottstown, according to its Facebook page. The pack during the weekend also will observe its annual Blue And Gold banquet.
