GILBERTSVILLE PA – The New Hanover Fire Company, 2154 Swamp Pike, will serve as the location for a memorial service to be held Saturday (May 10, 2014) at 2 p.m. in honor of 16-year-old Michael I. Finnegan, the Pottsgrove High School student who died in bicycle-car accident last Friday (May 2) night in West Pottsgrove.
Burial will be private, and no viewing is planned, according to the Schumacher and Benner Funeral Home and Crematory of Pottstown.
West Pottsgrove police confirmed Finnegan died as a result of injuries incurred after the bike on which he was riding home collided with a car stopped at the intersection of Manatawny Street and Sell Road. The driver of the vehicle involved would not have been able to avoid the crash, they reported.
Grief counselors were made available Monday (May 5) to assist students at the high school, and also at the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center in Limerick where Finnegan was enrolled in the automotive repair program. Friends and family members also erected impromptu memorials and held vigils at the accident scene.
Community members have responded as well. A online fund-raising campaign created to help Finnegan’s family cover funeral expenses had, as of Thursday (May 8) at 4:30 a.m., received more than $7,000 from 195 contributors.
Born in Pottstown, Finnegan was a son of the late Michael R. Finnegan and Angela (Eckenrode) Poirier, Stowe.
Surviving besides his mother is a stepfather, Stephen Poirier; a brother, Isaiah Eckenrode, Harrisburg; a sister, Alana Poirier, Stowe; grandparents Vic and Valerie Poirier, Holtwood PA; a grandmother, Kathy Bortz, Ormond Beach FL; and a grandfather, James Eckenrode, Douglassville.
