Police Investigate Sanatoga Car Wash Coin Theft

SANATOGA PA – Lower Pottsgrove detectives continue to investigate the theft last month (May 2015) of coins from machines at the Sanatoga Car Wash, 2772 E. High St., township Police Chief Michael Foltz reported, and they apparently aren’t alone in seeking suspects. Several other departments also are looking into similar thefts.

The chief offered few details about what happened and when in Sanatoga, but the local coin theft is said to have elements in common with others that have been reported as recently as last week in Union Township, Lebanon County; Derry and Swatara townships, Dauphin County; and earlier during May in West Earl Township, Lancaster County.

Pennsylvania State Police in the Jonestown PA barracks told the media last Saturday (June 6) they consider the Sanatoga incident, and possibly one in Douglassville too, to be part of the same string.

Thefts seen in video surveillance footage, according to troopers, involve a male and female couple who drive up to car wash machines, then use portable tools to drill through locks and empty the coins. In at least one incident they were riding in a 2013 or newer black Nissan Altima from which the license plate had been removed. At least one car wash was hit more than once, although different machines were involved.

The male is in his 30s, with a thin goatee and mustache, according to a description by Derry Township police. Both of his ears appear to be pierced, and he has distinctive tattoos on his neck and forearms. The woman appears to be in her 20s, with blonde hair.
