Pottsgrove High Principal Dr. Bill Ziegler, left; retiring Assistant Principal Jeff Madden, and Superintendent Shellie Feola pose Tuesday for a retirement photo
POTTSTOWN PA – Jeff Madden has been called a lot of things by staff and students alike during his tenure at Pottsgrove High School: assistant principal, dean of students, teacher, disciplinarian, coach, mentor, friend. What he wasn’t called, until Tuesday night (Aug. 11, 2015), was “retired.”
Madden’s departure from education this summer was formally recognized by Pottsgrove School District administrators and school directors during their Tuesday meeting, with a poignantly delivered goodbye from Superintendent Shellie Feola, a hug by high school Principal Dr. Bill Ziegler, and handshakes with board members.
“It’s been a honor to be here,” Madden told them. He was hired at Pottsgrove in 2009 to teach social studies, and promptly moved up the ranks. Madden’s not leaving the scene entirely; he will continue as head coach of the Pottsgrove wrestling team.
“Jeff is looking forward to spending time with his grandchildren … and his wife, I think, but that’s not in here,” Feola joked, and the board room audience erupted in laughter. “I just wanted to personally thank Jeff,” she continued, “because whenever you need something, Jeff is there. You always know Jeff is going to be there to take care of whatever’s needed. So we thank you, and wish you the best of luck.”
Also on hand and welcomed Tuesday was Madden’s successor as assistant principal, Eric Daney. Daney is the former science curriculum leader and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Academy physics teacher in the Downingtown School District. Daney’s hiring was completed only earlier in the day, according to district Technology and Communications Director Michael Wagman.
Ziegler promptly spread the word of Daney’s arrival by posting the news and a photo to the high school’s Twitter account. The school building’s current appearance in reconstruction served as the newcomer’s backdrop.
