Bechtel served on the township police force, rising through the ranks from officer to chief, from 1973 until his retirement in 2006. He earlier served as an officer in North Coventry.
Members of the township Board of Commissioners held a minute of silence Tuesday (Sept. 8) in honor of Bechtel at the start of its meeting. Board President Bruce Foltz said Bechtel had long been an advocate for Lower Pottsgrove and served the township in a variety of official and volunteer capacities with distinction. Township Manager Ed Wagner, who as former assistant manager worked with the chief for five years, praised his leadership.
