SANATOGA PA – It’s officially over, for now: Pottstown Area Rapid Transit (PART) bus service to and from stops inside Sanatoga Village Center on East High Street has ended. Riders can still get on and off the bus nearby, however.
Pottstown’s public transportation service announced on its website that effective today (Monday, Sept. 14, 2015) it “will no longer be servicing the Thriftway/Kmart shopping center.” Instead, PART said, its riders looking to board buses for “High Street via Philadelphia Premium Outlets (Eastbound to Outlets)” and “South End Loop via Home Depot” routes “should begin waiting at the High Street stop in front of Sanatoga Fire Company.”
Its buses will no longer drive down into the plaza itself for passenger pick-ups.
The change represents a minor inconvenience to some passengers who were accustomed to sitting on benches outside the now-closed Thriftway until PART arrived. There are no benches at curbside near the fire company.
PART’s announcement was expected. Lower Pottsgrove Township Manager Ed Wagner last week said he had asked it to discontinue entering the center to ensure people were not waiting by either the vacant supermarket or the also-closed K-Mart department store. Wagner said he wanted to avoid a recurrence of recent problems there that demanded police and fire responses.
Additionally, PART said, it would also discontinue “an active stop on the “South End Loop via Home Depot” on the south side of High Street near Brown Street. Customers wishing to utilize the South End Loop must be on the north side of Pleasant View Road. The bus will follow High Street and turn left onto Pleasant View Road.”
“Transfers will be allowed at these stops between lines,” it added.
