The interior of the Pottsgrove library awaits remaining finishes
POTTSTOWN PA – October promises to be a busy month for contractors working on the reconstruction of Pottsgrove High School, with the refurbished library at the Kauffman Road building scheduled to be turned over to district administrators by Oct. 9 (2015; Friday); expectations the cafeteria will follow a week later (Oct. 16); and several other portions of the project nearing completion.
But workers accidentally severed a conduit that carried power for exterior lighting at the high school and administration building entrances, Pottsgrove construction supervisor Jim Hanna of D’Huy Engineering reported Tuesday (Sept. 29) to the Board of School Directors, creating what he called “a security and safety issue.” That problem was being addressed immediately, he said.
And in anticipation of what could be heavy rain during the coming weekend as a by-product of Hurricane Joaquin, Hanna said earlier roofing leak issues in some high school areas, and specifically in the music instruction wing, seemed to have been solved.
Hanna gave directors a brief pictorial tour of results in the building, pointing out finishing touches in large group instruction rooms and the library. He showed how work on an “intricate flooring pattern” in the cafeteria had slowed its completion slightly, but added things were now “back on track.” “Critical work areas” to be tackled during this week included the faculty dining room, the school store, and its student banking area, Hanna said.
The exterior shell of the guidance office suite addition was in place, he said, but that area would not be turned over to the district until next summer.
In answer to a question posted by director Rick Rabinowitz, Hanna reported that all overtime payments authorized earlier by the board, for contractor work intended to complete construction projects due before the building opened, were discontinued as of Sept. 4. He is in the process of reviewing all overtime vouchers “to ensure we’re not paying for non-conforming work that had to be re-done,” Hanna added.
The board also approved payments for the project basaed on invoices from:
- general contractor E.R. Stuebner Construction Inc., paid $1,499,100.17;
- electrical contractor MBR Construction Services Inc., $126,405;
- mechanical contractor Frey Lutz Corp., $294,261.06; and
- plumbing contractor Integrity Mechanical Inc., $65,805.07.
