PennDOT Postpones 422 Beam-Setting Plans

KING OF PRUSSIA PA – Earlier plans to set 10 concrete beams this week across the Schuylkill River that would support a new bridge being built for westbound U.S. Route 422 near Stowe have been canceled, a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman announced Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 26, 2016).

The bridge spans the river between North Coventry and West Pottsgrove townships. PennDOT representative Charles Metzger, in a brief, two-sentence e-mail to news media, added “no new date has been set” for the work. No reason for the postponement was offered.

To set the beams the agency had planned closings and detours, between the 100 interchange at 422 westbound in North Coventry and West High (Benjamin Franklin Highway) in Douglassville, to occur nightly between Monday (Jan. 25) and Thursday (Jan. 28), PennDOT said last Friday (Jan. 22).

Winter storm Jonas arrived late Friday night, however, and continued to hammer the area through Sunday with more than two feet of snow, occasionally high winds and bitter cold. PennDOT and other crews had their hands full clearing highways as a result.
