Intense Tuesday Storm Prompts Many Delays

Traffic all along U.S. Route 422 slowed to a crawl in Tuesday’s intense winter storm

SANATOGA PA – Police patrols in Lower Pottsgrove, Pottstown and Limerick oversaw crawling traffic and dealt with relatively minor vehicular accidents; the Pottsgrove and Spring-Ford Area school districts canceled some activities; and public works road crews across western Montgomery County were kept busy maintaining roads, all in dealing Tuesday (Feb. 9, 2016) with a winter storm that proved to be intense but lacked much snow accumulation.

In most local areas, according to weather forecasts, the storm left 3 or fewer inches on the ground and streets in what, until nightfall, were above-freezing temperatures. The intensity of wind-whipped flakes lowered visibility, however. It led to a variety of fender-benders, and caused public events to be postponed as residents chose to stay indoors.

  • The storm effects were still being felt today (Wednesday, Feb. 10), as Pottsgrove, Pottstown and Spring-Ford Area schools all delayed opening their doors by two hours, giving buses more time to travel and safely pick up students.

In The Pottsgrove School District

Activity schedules in the Pottsgrove district changed as the weather grew worse. During mid-afternoon Tuesday, after-school events were canceled but the evening’s Board of School Directors’ meeting was tentatively set to proceed as planned. Then it, too, was postponed, as it became apparent to administrators that “rapidly deteriorating road conditions” would make travel difficult.

The directors’ meeting will be re-scheduled, district Director of Technology and Communications Michael Wagman said, as would a presentation of awards to the Pottsgrove boys’ soccer team that was part of its agenda.

Rehearsals for the district’s “Murder Mystery Dinner,” the high school Choraliers singers, and its jazz band, ACE mentoring sessions, and elementary school clubs including Reading Olympics all were put off.

For Pottsgrove sports, according to Director of Athletics and Activities Gary DeRenzo:

  • A high school wrestling match at home against Owen J. Roberts High was postponed to Thursday (Feb. 11) at 5 p.m. (weigh-in at 4 p.m.) in Pottsgrove High;
  • A high school swim meet at Owen J. Roberts was postponed to this afternoon (Wednesday, Feb. 10) at 3:45 p.m.; and
  • Middle school boys and girls basketball games will be played today (Wednesday, Feb. 10). The boys will play at Pottsgrove Middle School, and the girls will travel to Perkiomen Valley West Middle School. Both games will begin at 3:30 p.m.

In Lower Pottsgrove Township

The police department reminded residents to remove their vehicles off township roads to accommodate snow clearing and road salting efforts “until the snow has stopped falling and the snow has been completely plowed for the full width” or a highway.

In Upper Pottsgrove Township

Upper Pottsgrove’s Open Space and Recreation Committee meet, planned for Tuesday night, was canceled. No date for re-scheduling was announced.

In Spring-Ford Schools

Wednesday’s two-hour delayed opening caused the district to modify its attendance schedule for kindergarten students, it said. The district’s morning kindergarten session was to be limited from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the afternoon session from 11:55 a.m. to 3:40 p.m.
