In Just 10 Seconds: Hat Boxes On Parade

RECALLING WINTER FINERY – During decades, now long past, in which 1) women wore decorative hats as a fashion statement, and not just to keep their heads warm, and 2) when those hats were stored in specially made protective boxes, the label on a hatbox told passers-by about the owners’ worldly outlook, sense of refinement and taste, and size of their wallets or purses. At one time hatboxes from the Philadelphia-based Lit Brothers, Gimbels, and John Wanamaker department stores might be found in homes of the well-to-do across greater Pottstown. The Post found these samples last Saturday (Feb. 6, 2016) arranged above the vintage clothing racks of a retailer in Lionville, Chester County PA.
