SANATOGA PA – The Post Publications’ managing editor, Joe Zlomek, was appointed June 8 (2017; Thursday) by the Lower Pottsgrove Board of Commissioners as a volunteer member of the township Parks and Recreation Board to fulfill the unexpired term of Richard Wood, who recently relocated.
Zlomek, whose family has lived in Lower Pottsgrove for 28 years, was one of five residents who requested appointment to the vacancy. All of them were “highly qualified, and their willingness to serve is greatly appreciated,” township Manager Ed Wagner said.
Zlomek, a former bicyclist and now dedicated walker, is an advocate of the township, Montgomery County, and southeastern Pennsylvania parks trail systems. He walks several trails weekly. He will be the board’s most junior member, joining current members Dennis Cimino, Bill Keohane, Thomas C. Troutman, and Patricia M. Bleakley. The board serves in an advisory capacity to the commissioners and publicly meets 10 times a year, usually on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd.
During the commissioners’ meeting, Zlomek acknowledged his participation on the board presented a potential conflict of interest in work with his company’s publications: The Sanatoga Post, The Pottstown Post, The Limerick Post, and The Schwenksville Post.
He said he will not directly report on any matters or discussions that arise from parks and recreation meetings. He will cover parks and recreation news that arises from interactions with other township governing bodies when those entities – such as the commissioners – meet, but will issue a disclaimer in those stories about his parks and recreation board membership.
Zlomek has served in a variety of volunteer capacities for public, private and non-profit organizations since his arrival in the area during 1989 as former publisher of The (Pottstown PA) Mercury. He currently serves as a member of the Carl D. Perkins Scholarship Committee of the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center in Limerick, since February 2015; and during October 2016 was part of a volunteer group that collaborated to offer suggestions for the Pottsgrove School District’s latest Comprehensive Plan For Continuous Improvement.
