SANATOGA PA – It was more than 50 years ago that local musician Bill “Itchy” Koss decided he and some friends could entertain at a wedding party far better than the bands he was hearing then. That’s when the Bill Koss Combo was founded, his family members explain, and began playing everything and anything a newly married couple might want to hear as they celebrated their big day.
Except for the group’s size and listeners’ musical tastes, things haven’t much changed since then.
An extended circle of family members and their friends comprise the combo now; the band (at top) has grown from five to eight performers. They’re regularly booked at private functions and public venues across a three-state area – Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware – and not just close to home. But they still throw a wail of a party on stage, their many fans say, offering a variety of rock, blues, Big Band favorites, country, show tunes, and romantic ballads.
Summer Concert Series returns tonight in Sanatoga Park
The Bill Koss Combo, which in Lower Pottsgrove is so popular that for many years it’s been asked to play as the opening act of the township Summer Concert Series, returns in that role tonight (Sunday, June 25, 2017) at 6 p.m. at the Bandstand in Sanatoga Park, 223 S. Sanatoga Rd. Its show and all other concerts in the series are free and open to the public, including residents of Pottstown, Limerick, and surrounding municipalities.
Parking is available in the park’s lower and upper lots. Bring your own seating (none will be provided) or a comfortable blanket to spread out over the grass, and a picnic or snacks if you’d like. Most shows end by 8 p.m. or earlier.
The township last year invested heavily in a bandstand renovation project that resulted in more tiered seating areas for senior citizens and persons with special needs, smooth asphalt walkways and disability-complaint ramps, landscaping, and a complete overhaul of its adjacent restrooms. The result: there’s more room, and greater comfort, for concert-goers.
More concerts to plan for though Aug. 6
Also scheduled in the concert series during coming weeks are:
- July 9, rock band “Flamin’ Dick and The Hot Rods;”
- July 16, “Where’s Pete;”
- July 23, an hour-long show for children featuring “Makin’ Music,” followed by an adults’ show by band “Michael Kropp and The Indestructibles;”
- July 30, cajun tunes and music of the south by “Zydeco A-Go-Go;” and
- Aug. 6, marches and show tunes by the Pottsgrove Community Band.
For information, call the township municipal building at 610-323-0436 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Lower Pottsgrove’s summer concert series is underwritten by Exelon Corp. and its Limerick Generating Station.
