SANATOGA PA – Sunday night’s (Aug. 6, 2017) scheduled performance by the storied Pottsgrove Community Band was intended to be the final installment of this year’s Lower Pottsgrove summer concert series, underwritten by Exelon Corp. and its Limerick Generating Station. The show opens at 6 p.m. at the Bandstand in Sanatoga Park, 223 S. Sanatoga Rd.
Listeners anticipate it will be great – that’s why the band has lasted 58 years – and they can look forward to a program of marches by John Philip Sousa and other composers, show tunes, swing, jazz, and popular favorites. The successful group of talented musical volunteers is led by John Meko, and has already played at several venues during the summer.
Its show won’t be the last gasp of the series, though.
Rainy weather forced the township to cancel its July 23 planned concert: an hour-long performance for children featuring “Makin’ Music,” followed by an adults’ show with band “Michael Kropp and The Indestructibles.”
Rather than hold it on the following Monday (July 24) with limited attendance, as it has in the past, the township re-scheduled that performance for Aug. 13, again at 6 p.m. at the bandshell. Now more families can attend.
The concerts are free and open to the public, including residents of Pottstown borough and adjacent townships. Parking is available in the park’s lower and upper lots. Bring your own seating (none will be provided) or a comfortable blanket to spread out over the grass, and a picnic or snacks if you’d like. Most shows end by 8 p.m.
Refreshments also will be available for purchase on site from volunteers of the Sanatoga Fire Company.
The township last year invested heavily in a bandstand renovation project that resulted in more tiered seating areas for senior citizens and persons with special needs, smooth asphalt walkways and disability-complaint ramps, landscaping, and a complete overhaul of its adjacent restrooms. The result: there’s more room, and greater comfort, for concert-goers.
