Before You Gobble, Run With ‘Grove Turkeys

POTTSTOWN PA – Snacking can weight. Eating turkey can wait, too. On Thanksgiving morning (Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017), the place to see and be seen – but if you’re fast, not for long – is the seventh annual Toss Your Turkey 5-K Run sponsored by the Pottsgrove High School cross-country team.

On-site registration for the event starts at 7:30 a.m., 5-K runners take off at 8:30 a.m., and participants in an accompanying 1-mile fun run leave at 9:10 a.m., all from Montgomery County Community College, 101 College Dr. Online registration is now closed.

Runners also will have a chance to participate in the race’s namesake turkey toss, in which each competitor throws a frozen turkey for the greatest measured distance. Male and female runners who both toss the provided turkey the farthest and complete the race within allotted times (30 minutes for males, 35 minutes for females) will win a free pair of Saucony running shoes from Chester County Running Store.

Entry fees for the 5-K are $30, although special rates may be available for families and groups, and for members of the Sly Fox Track Club. The fun run is free to all. A portion of the race proceeds will benefit a local homeless shelter and help to feed those in need.

Toss Your Turkey veterans will encounter a new route this year, according to director Larry Rechtin. The course begins at Pottstown’s River Front Park and ends at the college parking lot. Importantly, runners on the very flat, fast, and wheel-measured 5-K are also assured they “will NOT go over the bridge twice this year.” Eighty percent of the race will occur on the Schuylkill River Trail bike path.

Chip timing will be in effect. Cash prizes of $100 are offered for first-place overall male and female runners; and of $50 for the second-place finishers. The first 500 5-K runners entered will receive a long-sleeved tech shirt, too.
