LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – All five school districts in The Post Publications’ coverage area – Pottsgrove, Pottstown, Spring-Ford Area, Perkiomen Valley, and Boyertown – decided to close their buildings today (Friday, Jan. 5, 2018) rather than expose students to the risks of 40-miles-an-hour winds and temperatures that felt as cold as zero or below.
Earlier reports of weather conditions initially prompted all districts but Boyertown – its closing decision was announced Thursday night – to plan for two-hour opening delays. As reports came in of worsening conditions, the remaining districts re-evaluated.
The Post thanks several readers for helping to update this story five separate times during the three hours since its 4:30 a.m. publication.

Here’s what we published earlier in the morning:
LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – The Pottsgrove, Pottstown and Boyertown school districts declared their schools will be closed Friday (Jan. 5, 2018) due to weather conditions. Administrators in the Spring-Ford Area, and Perkiomen Valley school districts planned their buildings would open on a two-hour delay
In Pottsgrove: The district on Friday morning said it had decided to close. Earlier, on Thursday, it attributed an initial decision to delay for two hours due to “the dangerously cold temperatures and high winds expected.” It asked parents to “ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the bus stop, as well as the ride to and from school.
In Pottstown: The district on Friday morning said it had decided to close. Earlier, on Thursday, it tentatively delayed for two hours and reminded parents that “breakfast is not served on 2-hour delays.”
In Spring-Ford: It said “AM and PM Kindergarten students will follow a modified schedule.” The morning kindergarten schedule was set for 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m; the afternoon schedule from 1:55 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
In Perkiomen Valley: “Due to the delay, kindergarten students will follow a modified schedule, with morning kindergarten attending from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and afternoon kindergarten attending from 1:30-3:15 p.m. Please keep an eye out for updates … as conditions may change,” it added. In a separate Twitter entry, it also said the morning session at the North Montco Technical Career Center would be canceled, but the afternoon session “follows normal schedule.”
In Boyertown: “Due to existing weather conditions, all Boyertown Area Schools District schools and offices will be closed on Friday,” it said, and added “all after-school activities have been canceled.”
