LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Part of the Pottsgrove School District’s budget discussions for the 2018-2019 academic year may include the addition of, or possibly a change in duties for, some of its administrative team‘s higher-level positions.
During the district Board of School Directors’ meeting tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018), the agenda indicates Superintendent Dr. William Shirk will introduce a proposal to create two new supervisory positions: a director of community relations and co-curricular programs, and a high school assistant principal for athletics and activities.
He additionally will propose creating an instructional support specialist position, and changing the job description of the secretary to the student activities director.
While the administrative posts do not currently exist in Pottsgrove’s employment inventory, much of the work Shirk seems to attribute to them is already being done, or has been done in the past, by individuals in its leadership group.
Director of Athletics and Student Activities Gary DeRenzo, for example, currently oversees most high school athletics and some activities. Former district Technology and Communications Director Michael Wagman handled media relations and communications duties before moving on to the West Chester School District in 2016. After his departure, media contacts were taken up by Shirk’s secretary, Laurie Bickert.
The agenda does not specify if the new positions represent Shirk’s vision of reorganization in leadership, or merely a way to better fill perceived gaps in duties. It also does not indicate if some of those in administration will receive new titles, duties, or salary changes, or if new hires are anticipated. If the latter is the case, the agenda does not indicate prospective costs. Speculation about those topics may be answered during the ensuing discussion.
- The meeting is free to attend and open to the public. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the large group instruction room at Pottsgrove High School, 1345 Kauffman Rd. A copy of the agenda is available for download from the district website, here.
The full board meeting will be preceded at 6 p.m. by a meeting of the Operations and Facilities Committee.
