Sanatoga Engineers Talk With Students On Careers

Bursich employees Dane Moyer, left, and Nick Duchan discuss civil engineering and surveying with Wilson High School students.

SANATOGA PA – Students at Wilson Senior High School in the Reading PA suburb of West Lawn, part of the Wilson School District, recently benefited from the professional expertise of two employees of Bursich Associates, the Sanatoga-based civil and environmental engineering, planning, and surveying firm.

Bursich’s Dane Moyer and Nick Duchan participated in the school’s Project Lead The Way, and described for students the aspects, schooling, and career paths of civil engineers and land surveyors, company Director of Business Development Brian Fraley said Thursday (April 8, 2010).

Their presentation regarding civil engineering and architecture “focused on what it takes to become a licensed surveyor and civil engineer as far as schooling, academic skills, and specialized training,” Fraley said. Both explained the importance of higher level math skills and proficiency with computer-aided drafting, and shared stories about their work. The session ended with an explanation of technology used in the professions, and a brief discussion of starting salaries.

With a staff of 40, Bursich serves local, county, state, and federal governments, as well as working with residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. Founded in 1972, Bursich’s headquarters are located at 2129 E. High St., Pottstown PA.

Guiderail Discussion Back On Track

SANATOGA PA – Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township’s negotiations are back on track with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) over the repair of guard rails on the Sunnybrook Road bridge that crosses Sprogels Run, according to township Engineer Scott Exley of Bursich Associates. The talks suffered a delay neither Exley or the state expected, he said.

“We’ve been going back and forth with PennDOT” on the issue,” Exley told the township Board of Commissioners last week (Monday, June 1, 2009) during the first of its two monthly meetings, “but we’re on top of it,” he said.

PennDOT earlier this year claimed top-priority repairs needed to be made to the bridge just north of Kepler Road and slightly more than a half-mile from the intersection of Sunnybrook Road and East High Street. The agency’s chief complaint was that its guardrails needed fixing.

Conversations bogged down recently, Exley said, because PennDOT had too much on its plate with the onset of projects rushed to begin upon arrival of federal economic stimulus money. “The guy I’ve been talking with on this just didn’t have time to get back to me,” Exley noted. “There was too much else going on.”

The township hopes to complete whatever repairs are necessary by month’s end.

Bursich Wins Electrical Code Reviews

SANATOGA PA – Lower Pottsgrove‘s township engineer, Bursich Associates of 2129 E. High St., will review electrical wiring plans for structures regulated by the township building code, under an agreement approved Thursday (May 21, 2009) by the township Board of Commissioners during its second monthly meeting in the municipal building, 2199 Buchert Rd.

Building code reviews normally are conducted by township Zoning Officer and Director of Codes Keith A. Place. Place is working on, but has not yet finished, updating his state certification for electrical reviews, township Manager Rodney Hawthorne told board members. That makes it necessary – probably only for a short time, Hawthorne noted – to contract with a third-party firm to conduct the review work.

Bursich was the lowest bidder, at a cost of $60 hourly. Four other bids ranged as high as $80 hourly. Money to cover the cost is already budgeted, Hawthorne said.
