Sanatoga Meals Program Hopes You Can Help

Receiving a ready-to-heat meal, and a smile from those who deliver it, can mean a lot to the home-bound.

POTTSTOWN PA – Volunteers are needed by the Sanatoga PA-based Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program to deliver meals to home bound elderly and disabled individuals in the greater Pottstown area, agency spokeswoman Karen Konnick reported Monday (Oct. 11, 2010).

Meals on Wheels provides two meals, a hot lunch and a cold supper to refrigerate, to an average of 160 recipients in Pottstown, Royersford and the Lower Perkiomen Valley. Despite the program’s size, Konnick said, a volunteer’s time commitment is usually small.

Many volunteers drive only once a week, on a weekday for about an hour beginning at 10:30 a.m. from the Family Services’ office, located at 1976 E. High St., Pottstown PA. Others volunteer less frequently as substitute drivers, and they’re needed too.

Volunteer drivers must have a valid driver’s license, insurance and their own reliable vehicle.  Training is provided.

For more information or to volunteer, call Ruth Hood at 610-326-1610 Ext. 226.

Peanuts! Get'cher Peanuts In Sanatoga, Heah

PUSHING PEANUTS AS IN DAYS GONE BYE – Carrying on a local, decades-old tradition, members of the Kiwanis Club of Pottstown PA gathered Saturday (Oct. 9, 2010) outside the front doors of the Sanatoga Thriftway, East High Street, to sell peanuts-in-the-shell for a dollar a bag as an annual fund-raiser for their youth projects. Patients Get An Exam, Meals Program Gets A Donation

Meals On Wheels program director Shushma Patel, left, receives an oversize $1,000 check from Jill Hambleton, Cassandra Johnson and Dr. Niraj Patel of the Chiropractic and Wellness Center P.C.

SANATOGA PA – A Pottstown PA chiropractor and his staff have donated $1,000 to the Meals On Wheels program that operates from the Family Services of Montgomery County office on East High Street in Sanatoga, as a result of a recent business-and-fund-raising promotion.

Dr. Niraj Patel and his employees at Chiropractic and Wellness Center P.C., which opened new offices at 1143 E. High St., Pottstown, presented their check to Meals on Wheels thanks to an offer made by Patel to new patients. Patients received a complimentary consultation, exam and a report of Patel’s findings on their health in exchange for a $25 donation to Meals on Wheels.

“We are truly grateful for the generous support of Dr. Patel, and the staff and patients of the Chiropractic and Wellness Center,” said Shushma Patel, Meals on Wheels program director. The money will be used to provide meals to senior citizens who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, she said.

Each weekday, Meals on Wheels provides two meals – a hot lunch and a cold supper to refrigerate – to an average of 160 home-bound elderly and disabled individuals in Pottstown, Royersford and the Lower Perkiomen Valley. Community volunteers deliver more than 81,000 meals a year.

Pottsgrove American Legion Meets This Week

Members of the Pottsgroves American Legion Post served Sept. 11 in a color guard for the Open Doors community day event in Pottstown.

STOWE PA -There’s plenty to be talked about Thursday (Sept. 23, 2010) at 7:30 p.m., when members of the Sanatoga-based Brig. Gen. Elmer S. Friedberg American Legion Post 244 gather for their September meeting in St. Gabriel Lodge, at the corner of Jefferson Street and Grosstown Road, Stowe PA. Veterans of the Legion so far have had a very busy month.

Post members Commander Ed Clark, Adjutant Billy Worrell, Larry McCann and Chuck Kropp (in photos above and below) were on hand to serve as one of two color guards available for the Open Doors community day event Sept. 11 (2010) in Pottstown PA. It included a solemn ceremony commemorating those who lost their lives during terrorist attacks in New York City.

Paying homage to the fallen of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Then on Sunday (Sept. 19), Post members were again in attendance for the annual POW-MIA Recognition Day ceremonies held at the Vietnam War memorial in Memorial Park, West King Street, Pottstown, by the Friends of The Forgotten.

And as they do six times a year, Post members were busy during August (photo at bottom) conducting Bingo games for residents of the Southeastern Veterans Center in Spring City PA. The bi-monthly games are organized, operated, and supplied with prizes by the Post at no cost to the center or participants. The next games are scheduled for Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the center.
