No matter what’s decided by the Pottsgrove Board of School Directors regarding renovations at the high school, repairs it authorized earlier – including replacing roofing on the gym and auditorium – are moving ahead.

Taxpayers who voiced opinions earlier this week generally said a new gymnasium proposed for Pottsgrove High School would boost its sports programs and instill pride. School board members said it would allow administrators to have students gather all in one location.

That’s all it took in 1967 – a $1.2 million bond issue – to add 15 “teaching stations,” a small gym, new offices for administrators and guidance staff, and custodial space to Pottsgrove High School. The expansion increased the school’s student capacity by 374 students to a total of 1,308.

The estimated base price for all recommended repairs and expansions to Pottsgrove High School has been reduced, but a new gym option has been added, raising the project’s total package cost from $30.6 million to $34.5 million in just six days.

It was intended to be a “presentation area” when it was first created, and it may be one still if included in Pottsgrove High School’s $30 million proposed renovation. Right now, though, a circular patio at the northeast side of the building’s Kauffman Road entrance is deteriorating and unused.

Just as Pottsgrove High School sees opportunity in expanding its offerings in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, so too does Montgomery County Community College. It hopes a newly revised engineering degree program will attract local STEM grads.
