Friday Night Football: Pottsgrove 20, Spring-Ford 14

POTTSTOWN PA – What makes a homecoming sweet? A football game between closely matched rivals, a contest with some drama and excitement, and a win, of course. All were in place Friday night (Oct. 8, 2010) as the Pottsgrove High School Falcons took on the Spring-Ford Senior High Rams at Pottsgrove’s Kauffman Road stadium. The Falcons won, 20-14, during the Homecoming Weekend bout.

Reason To Cheer: Pottsgrove Homecoming's Here

POTTSTOWN PA – At Pottsgrove High School today (Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010), it’s officially “Make Your Own T-Shirt Day,” one of those rare events in which students’ tastefully outlandish attire will probably pass muster among principals and teachers, so long as it positively promotes the alma mater.

The Falcons hope to win another big game for Coach Rick Pennypacker.

That’s because this week is Homecoming Week at Pottsgrove, during which students, parents and district residents all can revel in the glory of scholastic and athletic accomplishments, and help charitable causes as well. The week began Monday with Jersey Day, and was observed Tuesday with Clash Day and Wednesday with Dress-Up Day.

Friday, when the Pottsgrove High School Falcons’ football team takes on the Spring-Ford Senior High School Rams at home, inevitably is “Maroon-And-White Day.” Clothing in school colors is de rigueur.

There’s another potential reason for advance celebration, Pottsgrove School District Athletic Director Gary DeRenzo noted. Pottsgrove head football Coach Rick Pennypacker, who last week (Oct. 1, 2010) “became the all-time leader” in football wins in the 25-year-old Pioneer Athletic Conference (the PAC-10), can add to his record of 130 wins by having the Falcons rough up Spring-Ford, from which Pennypacker is an alum.

“Congratulations to the coach, the assistant coaches – past and present – and all those players who have passed through the doors of Pottsgrove,” DeRenzo added.

Homecoming events scheduled for today (Thursday, Oct. 7):

  • A traditional bonfire at the high school, from 6:30-8 p.m. The lighting will be accompanied by performances from the high school marching band and its cheerleaders, and the introduction of the football team.
  • Immediately following the bonfire, from 8-10 p.m., a dance for Pottsgrove students only is scheduled in the high school cafeteria. Tickets cost $5.

On Friday (Oct. 8):

  • A pep rally open to all Pottsgrove Falcons fans will be held, weather permitting, in the high school stadium at 1 p.m.
  • The second annual Arts & Athletics Spaghetti Dinner will be served from 4-6:45 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Proceeds benefit the district Music League, the high school Football Club, and district athletics. Tickets, available at the door, cost $8 per person for ages 5 and older; younger than 5 are free. Pottsgrove choirs director and sports booster Cynthia Foust reports the dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, a roll, salad, beverage and dessert.
  • The Music League will sponsor a clothing drive from 3-8 p.m. at receptacles on School Lane near the stadium entrance. Donors are encouraged to visit the ClothingDrive.net website <www.clothingdrive.net> for a list of acceptable items.
  • The homecoming king and queen receive their crowns in a specially-called court a 5 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
  • Then, at 7 p.m., is the “big moment” as the Falcons’ football team opposes rivals Spring-Ford in the Pottsgrove stadium.

On Saturday (Oct. 9):

  • A 5-K cross-country run across Pottsgrove’s course starts at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at the high school.
  • The Music League clothing drive continues from 9 a.m. to noon. See details in Friday’s listings, above.
  • New members of the Pottsgrove School District honor roll will be inducted during a noon ceremony and luncheon at Cutillo’s Restaurant, East High Street, Sanatoga. Tickets cost $23.
  • Wrapping up the weekend will be contests between Pottsgrove varsity and JV soccer teams, beginning at 2 p.m. in the stadium and on the soccer field, respectively, against the matching squads from Delaware County’s Springfield High School. Before the games, the teams will conduct fund-raising to benefit cancer research, according to the district athletic department.

Same Rain, Same Old Song In Sports Postponements

Same Rain, Same Old Song In Sports Postponements

POTTSTOWN PA – Won’t the rain ever stop? Pottsgrove School District Athletic Director Gary DeRenzo has probably been asking himself that question for days.

DeRenzo, whose job in part is to schedule – and in case of inclement weather, re-schedule – the district’s many athletic contests, on Wednesday (Oct. 6, 2010) announced the latest in a long series of rain-related postponements over the past seven days.

  • The Boyertown West vs. Pottsgrove 8th grade football game at Boyertown West was postponed to a time and date to be determined.
  • The middle school field hockey game vs. Perkiomen Valley East at Pottsgrove Middle School has was postponed to Oct. 18 (Monday) due to unplayable field conditions.
  • The girls middle school soccer game at Spring-Ford was postponed due to unplayable conditions.

Flyer Goalie Celebrity Host For PMMC Spine Center

Bernie Parent

POTTSTOWN PA – Legendary Philadelphia Flyer goalie Bernie Parent will serve as a celebrity host Oct. 30 (2010; Saturday) from 2-4 p.m. in the Route 422 Sportsplex, 1400 Industrial Hwy., Pottstown PA (Lower Pottsgrove Township), as Pottstown Memorial Medical Center introduces its Center for Orthopedics and Spine medical team to the public. The event is free.

This event has been added to The Post calendar.

The new center “is home to some of the finest orthopedic surgeons in the area,” said John Kirby, PMMC’s chief executive officer. It is fitting to have Parent, the “goalie from the championship 1970s era, to help us get the word out” about the hospital’s facility and its surgeons, Kirby said. Members of the Orthopedics and Spine team will be on hand to talk with parents, athletes, coaches and athletic trainers. Parent will sign pucks and autograph photos.

The first 200 visitors will receive a free PMMC Orthopedics and Spine Center t-shirt; a free puck; and a free autographed photo.
