Friday, Nov. 12

Pottsgrove School District students have the day off Friday. Schools will be closed so the district can conduct a staff in-service day. Enjoy the long weekend!

The Moms Club Of New Hanover (PA) Township will meet Friday at 10 a.m. in Gilbertsville. If you are interested in membership or attending the meeting, call 484-300-6466.

An open house at which parents can meet and interview providers of pre-school care and education will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to Noon by the Collegeville PA Moms Club at Christ’s Church Of The Valley, 1560 Yeager Rd., Royersford PA. Admission is free. The event anticipates more than 20 pe-school providers from Collegeville, Trappe, Royersford, Limerick, Schwenksville and surrounding areas. ACLAMO, the community organization that provides a variety of services to Latino families, will hold an open house Friday from 1:30-4 p.m., during which illness prevention topics will be discussed. Empty Bowls 2010, a dining fund-raiser to benefit Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS), will be held Friday from 5-9 p.m. in the Artisan’s Gallery and Café, 234 Bridge St., Phoenixville PA. Take-out service begins at 4 p.m. Proceeds will be used to support PACS’ food, financial, and social services assistance to more than 200 households monthly. Advance reservations are suggested.

School House Rock Live,” a production that draws its inspiration from the popular 1970s Emmy Award-winning cartoon series, will be staged Friday through Sunday in evening and matinée performances by the Encore Theater Company at Pottstown Middle School, 600 N. Franklin St., Pottstown PA. The Friday night performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Shows on Saturday and Sunday both will be at 1:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults, and $10 for seniors and children between the ages of 4 and 18. Saturday, Nov. 13

Food historian Karen Dougherty will be demonstrate how traditional mincemeat, a once-popular holiday pie filling, is made using apples, spices, spirits and other ingredients with 18th century recipes Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peter Wentz Farmstead, 2100 Shearer Rd., Worcester PA. A special Senior Veterans Appreciation Cabaret, featuring musical, dramatic, and comedic performances for older adults, will be staged Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Tri-County Performing Arts Center, 245 High St., Pottstown PA. What has become an annual breakfast salute to U.S. Armed Forces veterans in the state’s 44th Senatorial District, which includes Lower Pottsgrove and Limerick PA townships and the borough of Pottstown, will be held Saturday from 8-10 a.m. in Sunnybrook Ballroom, 50 Sunnybrook Rd., Sanatoga PA, Sen. Legendary Philadelphia Flyer goalie Bernie Parent will serve as a celebrity host Saturday from 2-4 p.m. in the Route 422 Sportsplex, 1400 Industrial Hwy., Pottstown PA (Lower Pottsgrove Township), as Pottstown Memorial Medical Center introduces its Center for Orthopedics and Spine medical team to the public. Friday, Oct. 22

Learn how to use social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter for personal life and business, in a free workshop to be held Friday from 1-2 p.m. at Phoenixville Public Library, 183 Second Ave., Phoenixville PA. Presenter Ernie Tidball will show participants how to connect with business professionals, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues using social networks.

A toy train display and show with no admission fee will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday on the campus of the Frederick Mennonite Community, 2849 Big Rd., Frederick PA. The show is being conducted by members of the South Eastern Pennsylvania Garden Railway Society.

Musical performers “The Dark Side” will play Friday from 7:30-11 p.m. at Island Pizza, 3060 Limekiln Rd., Birdsboro PA.

Friday, Oct. 1

Community Music School, 775 West Main Street, Trappe PA, invites area instructors to attend a piano workshop, titled “Guidelines for Interpretation,” given by renowned piano clinician and teacher Marvin Blickenstaff  on Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at the school. The day will include a provided lunch and beverage, face painting, a “paint a horse shoe” activity, balloon animals and two playgrounds. Dogs and horses are welcome. The cost is $10 per person, and $5 for children ages2-12.

An inaugural Community Day 5K Race and Fitness Walk, the proceeds of which will benefit an alumni fund that provides scholarships to help students realize their educational goals, will be held Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. on the central campus of Montgomery County Community College, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell PA. Registration check-in begins at 8 a.m., and the race and walk starts at 9 a.m.

Sunday, Oct. 3

Sweet Water Golf Course in Pennsburg PA will host a four-person, nine-hole Scramble Tournament for Breast Cancer on Sunday. The women’s format starts at 8 a.m. and the mixed couples and men-only  format starts at 1 p.m. (possible shotgun starts). Entry fee is $35 per person, which includes greens fees for nine holes, food, beverages and prizes for winners.

Come rain or shine, its members say, the Woman’s Club of Birdsboro will host its annual car show Sunday  from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Daniel Boone High School, Chestnut Street (Route 345), Birdsboro PA. The day features food, a disc jockey, door prizes, a 50-50 drawing, a model car contest and a Chinese auction, and a blood drive by the Miller Keystone Blood Center.

The annual Berks County Art Show, featuring antique paintings by Berks County (PA) artists, will open Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. andrun throught next week at various times at Greshville Antiques and Fine Art, 1041 Reading Ave., Boyertown PA.

King St., Pottstown PA, for what organizers call a fun-filled and educational field trip to explore 18th Century skills, trades, and pastimes. The 11th annual Fringe Festival at Ursinus College, which features professional theater companies that have just appeared in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, as well as student and faculty performances, continues Friday and Saturday, primarily in the Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center on the Main Street, Collegeville PA, campus. It’s an invitation to experience many of the area’s greatest restaurants and a chance to sample the best food the region has to offer. The annual community day of the Ridge Fire Company for area residents will be held Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the fire hall, 480 Ridge Rd., Spring City PA. The event, which is free and open to the public, is an opportunity to meet local firefighters, police officers and EMS members and see their apparatus. The “Vets of the Future” class lasts about one hour. It is intended to teach youngsters what is involved in becoming a vet, and introduce them to the world of veterinary medicine. Fry said participants will have a chance to look in a microscope, look at X-rays, see an EKG simulation, view her surgery suite, and join in a question-and-answer session about pet care.

The Friends of the Forgotten Motorcycle Club, based in Skippack PA, will conduct a ride on the same day, beginning at 11:30 a.m. from the Lone Star Steakhouse at Coventry Mall, Route 724, and ending at about 1 p.m. at the gazebo.

The 67th annual Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show and Country Fair is set to debut Saturday (Sept. 4, 2010) and continue through Monday (Sept. 6) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the show grounds on the west side of Route 100 south in Ludwigs Corner PA, near the intersection of Route 401. The show is expected to feature more than 500 competitors in a variety of different divisions and classes, including hunters, jumpers, sidesaddle, pleasure and family riding. Downtown Pottstown PA will observe the Labor Day holiday with its First Saturday celebration at Smith Family Plaza, 100 High St., in the heart of the business district from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Several fun family ativities and demonstrations by local businesses and organizations are scheduled. Musical performance will be offered by Dina Hall from Noon to 2 p.m. A “men In Spikes” fund-raiser is planned, and a bake sale will be held to benefit the Forgotten Cats project.

A first-ever “Hot Wheels Drag Racing Tournament,” featuring the popular toy vehicles in a race down a portion of High Street in downtown Pottstown PA, will be part of the Nostalgia Night classic car show being conducted by the Pottstown Classics Car Club on Saturday (Sept. 4, 2010) from 5-9 p.m. Any owners of a Hot Wheels or Matchbox-branded toy can compete for a trophy. The show itself features dozens of club members’ cars on display and lining the street. The event is free.

Spend a casual summer Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Pottsgrove Manor, West King Street, Pottstown PA, as volunteers demonstrate a variety of 18th Century trades and pastimes during the last of five weekly historical adventures called “Living History Sundays.” Costumed interpreters will live life the colonial way, with activities such as needlework, gun-smithing, butter churning, and tape-loom weaving. Visitors can watch, learn, and even join in; activities will vary weekly. A donation of $2 per person is suggested. For more information, call 610-326-4014.

Colorful and fascinating monarch butterflies, which begin to migrate south as the length of daylight shortens, will be the subjects of a program sponsored by the Chester County Parks and Recreation Department on Aug. 29 (2010; Sunday) from 2-3:30 p.m. at Pavilion 2 in Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Rd., Pottstown PA. Many questions remain unanswered about the migration of monarchs east of the Rocky Mountains. Chester County park rangers Jay Erb and Lisa Miller will have participants help tag and monitor these butterflies.

The annual Goschenhoppen Folk Festival opens Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Henry Antes Plantation, 318 Colonial Rd., Perkiomenville PA, just off Route 73 in Upper Frederick Township. Old fashioned foods and Pennsylvania Dutch meals are for sale on the festival grounds. Young and old alike can leisurely enjoy more than 500 skilled and apprentice craftsmen giving live demonstrations of more than 150 skills of the 18th and 19th centuries. Dressed in authentic costumes of the periods, they use authentic tools in recreating traditional home skills, trades, pastimes, foods, and folk music.
