Meals On Wheels Hoping You’ll Volunteer Some Time

Needed: cheery volunteers for meals' delivery

POTTSTOWN PA – Montgomery County Family Services’ Meals On Wheels program needs volunteers to pack and deliver meals to home-bound elderly and disabled individuals in the greater Pottstown area, agency Marketing Director Karen Konnick said Thursday (June 23, 2011).

Each weekday, Meals On Wheels provides two meals – a hot lunch, and a cold supper to refrigerate – to an average of 160 home-bound elderly and disabled individuals in Pottstown, Royersford and the Lower Perkiomen Valley. Volunteers personally deliver more than 81,000 meals a year.

Volunteers meet weekdays at Family Services’ Pottstown office, 1976 E. High St., Sanatoga PA, to pack meals during one of two shifts: from 8–10:15 a.m., or from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Those who deliver meals arrive at the office at 10:30 a.m., and take about 90 minutes to complete their routes. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license, current insurance and their own reliable vehicle.

Most volunteers commit to packing or delivering meals once a week; others volunteer on a substitute basis. Training is provided.

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – A team of nine volunteers from Diamond Credit Union,  headquartered at 1600 Medical Dr., participated recently in the United Way Day of Caring.

Half the team painted and did other chores at the Meridian Home for Girls in Royersford; the other half organized and packed food and clothing donations for the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities.

Days of Caring are a United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania effort to provide assistance to non-profit organizations that rely on volunteers. This is the third year that Diamond participated in the event.

Two Volunteer To Help Historians

At the Historical Society.

At the Historical Society.

SANATOGA PA – Two local professionals, an attorney and an accountant, have volunteered their services to help the township Historical Society file paperwork necessary to become a charitable organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.

Township Solicitor R. Kurtz Holloway, of the law firm Wells Loeben Hoffman Holloway And Stauffer, 635 E. High St., Pottstown PA, and Matthew Cappelletti Jr. of Cappelletti, Pinter & Company, P.C. certified public accountants, 700 Heritage Dr., have agreed to help the society register for Section 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. That allows the society’s donors to claim a tax deduction for their contributions.

Society member and former township commissioner Tom Troutman recently made Holloway aware of the historians’ interest in the IRS recognition, according to the solicitor, who told the township Board of Commissioners of  his and Cappelletti’s involvement. The society’s museum, offices and meeting space occupy the former Sanatoga Chapel, 2341 East High St.
