Everyone Got Healthier At Pottstown Y Family Event

Young Amelia Shelgren, daughter of Jennifer Shelgren of Douglassville PA, used Mom's leg to do her own specialized pull-ups Saturday during the YMCA's Healthy Family Day.

POTTSTOWN PA – When the Freedom Valley YMCA‘s Pottstown branch schedules free activities to make families healthier, as it did Saturday (April 9, 2011) at the Y on North Adams Street, it apparently plans for EVERY member of the family.

The Healthy Family Event, as its day was called, started with a fund-raising run and walk on neighboring borough streets. Then the healthiness moved inside the building, with kickball games, moon bounce entertainment, a clown’s antics, swimming, and plenty of other exercises disguised as fun. No one – not infants, not kids, not teens, not adults – was left out of the action.

Kayla Williams, lying on a pad in front of the moon bounce, and brother Dwight, with his back to the camera, got help tying their sneakers from mother Chanell Williams of Pottstown.

Kick ball games were held in one of the Y's several gyms.

Even animal members of the family received attention. One YMCA staffer took time to visit with the mascot of Pottstown's Goodwill Fire Company, on hand to provide medical help.

The push to help local families become healthier also marked the start of the YMCA’s second session of spring programs. Hundreds of classes are being offered across all five branches of the Y, including fitness training, swimming lessons, aqua exercise, yoga, Zumba dancing, and Kettlebell. Registration also will be held for summer camps and recreational sports leagues.
