There’s No Clownin’ With Schuylkill River Flood Stage

YFrog photo sharing user abonenberger17 found this whimsically-dressed woman walking Thursday near the banks of the Schuylkill River in downtown Pottstown

POTTSTOWN PA – As the Schuylkill River overflowed its banks Thursday (Sept. 8, 2011) in downtown and South Pottstown – causing officials to close roads, cut power, and evacuate residents – some folks tried to take a lighter approach to the peril. Maybe that’s what caused one local neighbor to dress up in gaily-colored garb and trudge across the borough’s rain-sodden streets (above).

While others may not have been quite so adventurous, they filled Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms with commentary. Here’s what some of them were saying:

Army Corps of Engineers to release water from Blue Marsh- could lead to more serious flooding of Schuylkill River @ Pottstown, maybe Philly

Was down in Pottstown today. Literally saw a park that was completely under water. Looked like a lake, except batting cages for baseball made it obvious that there was once a park down there.

No sooner do we say good night Irene than we say hello Lee. Which puts me back staffing a Red Cross shelter (again!) in lovely down town Pottstown, PA…where apparently they keep all the overflowing creeks and rivers. Who knew? Boy I”ll be happy when this hurricane season ends.
