Pottstown Band Earns 2nd Place, And Something More

POTTSTOWN PA – Pottstown High School’s 95-member band marching band “delivered an exciting performance” last Saturday (Sept. 24, 2011) during the annual Boyertown Cavalcade of Bands, earning the second-highest score in the competition’s Yankee Division and placing fourth overall in a field crowded by marchers from several other high schools, according to band director Michael Vought.

The Trojan exhibition was “reminiscent of old-time school and community pride,” Pottstown School District Director of Community Relations John Armato added.

This year’s Pottstown show, titled ‘Gridiron Glory,’ “was a success four our Pottstown Marching Band family on many levels,” Vought said. “Our show is geared toward entertaining the crowd, and the kids delivered an exciting performance that had the audience smiling and tapping their toes to the music … I think this shows a mutual appreciation between the school and the community. We didn’t come in first place (during the event), but we accomplished something bigger: pride in our marching band, pride in our community, pride in Pottstown.”

For the second consecutive year, Pottstown’s band pit crew received the Boyertown Cavalcade “Outstanding Pit Crew” award. Crew members, who are parents of band students and volunteer their time, include Al James, Paul Kolbmann, John Mutter, Joe Campbell, Phil and Tammy Vontor, Cole and Nancy Sellers, Jay Lafferty, and Lynn Andrews.

The pit crew recognition was “the highlight of the evening,” Vought claimed. The award, he said, “recognized the people who help create and maintain our pit percussion equipment, our trailer and our student instruments.” When Pottstown’s name was announced as the winner, Vought noted “our kids exploded in cheers!”

Vought is assisted in his marching band duties by Nancy Mest, Ben Hayes, Dennis Pringle and Adam Schlegel. Senior Jaira Kurtz is the band’s field director, and she led The Trojan performance against competitors from Wyomissing, Upper Perkiomen, Pottsgrove, Governor Mifflin, Owen J. Roberts, and Boyertown.
