VALLEY FORGE PA – PJM Interconnection, the King of Prussia PA-based consortium consisting of Exelon and other electric utility companies that operates the region’s high-voltage power grid serving 58 million customers in 14 states, announced Wednesday (Nov. 9, 2011) it had completed a switch to advanced equipment to run the grid and wholesale power markets.

Each of PJM’s several control centers are now able to run the system independently if needed, it said. PJM claimed to be the only grid operator in North America, and one of the few worldwide, to have such dual primary control centers.

The $200 million installation follows more than five years of design, development and testing. PJM said it began the program to raise its systems to new standards for security and resiliency, and to ensure continuity of wholesale electricity markets PJM administers, which are valued at $35 billion annually.
