Pottstown Roller Derby Team Draws 30 New Recruits

POTTSTOWN PA – A recruitment night held earlier this month by the Pottstown Roller Derby Rockstars attracted more than 30 women who indicated they’d like their own shot at speeding, swooping, angling, and slamming around a track in the locally fast-growing sport, team representative Kristin McGuire said Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2012).

The league in which the Rockstars play already has 50 women as members, McGuire said, and the interest expressed in joining them demonstrates “we are growing and gaining tremendous local popularity. The bottom line here: people are interested in Pottstown Roller Derby.” To underscore her point, she noted:

  • The team “held a bout in October (2011) during the only snowstorm of the year. Despite the horrendous weather, we had 100 people show up to buy tickets at the door, on top of the over 300 pre-sale tickets sold;”
  • “Our own Hillbilly Hustler was chosen as an All-Star among regional skaters;” and
  • “We currently have over 1500 Facebook fans, and growing.”

Practice for the Rockstars’ second season is under way. The team needs non-skating officials to assist with pre-season scrimmages, held Thursday nights at the Pheasantland Roller Rink, 551 Manatawny Road. Boyertown PA. For more information or to volunteer, send an e-mail here.
