POTTSTOWN PA – A Reading Olympics competition Thursday (Feb. 24, 2012) at the Pottstown School District’s Rupert Elementary School attracted a roomful of readers and a two surprise guests, the chief executive officer and the ever-smiling mascot of a local credit union.

Diamond Credit Union, headquartered on Medical Drive in Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township, is in its seventh consecutive year of providing financial sponsorship for Pottstown’s involvement in the reading contests held across Montgomery County. To mark the occasion, Diamond President and CEO John Faust, and Chip, the Diamond mascot, arrived to cheer on the readers.

The Reading Olympics is intended to encourage children to read. It is a rapid recall question-and-answer competition that asks teams of students to answer questions pulled from up to 50 different books. The event helps children learn about teamwork, and seeks to improve reading comprehension.

Diamond’s funding helps to buy books and T-shirts, and provide transportation to Pottstown’s Reading Olympics events.

“This is one of my favorite events,” Faust said, “because I love seeing the kids so excited about reading and working together in teams. They are so proud of what they have accomplished and they should be. It’s wonderful to see two teams shake hands after a competition well played.”
