Fund-Raising Run Helps Pottstown ‘Operation Backpack’

POTTSTOWN PA – The third annual “Operation Backpack 5K Run,” a fund-raising event that benefits low-income Pottstown school children who suffer from malnutrition, is scheduled for April 14 (2012; Saturday) on the Schuylkill River Trail through Riverfront Park on College Drive. The race on the flat, fast, and scenic rail-to-trail course is open to the public.

Operation Backpack kicks into action at Pottstown schools every Friday. On weekdays during school, qualified children receive free lunches. On weekends, however, they often go hungry because their family has little or no food at home. Because of Operation Backpack, backpacks of nutritious food are sent home with children at week’s end so they have food that sustains them until the following Monday.
