Shenkel Church Prayer Service Honors The Fallen
POTTSTOWN PA – Following its Sunday (May 27, 2012) worship service at 8:30 a.m., members of the Shenkel United Church of Christ, 1580 Shenkel Rd., Pottstown, will hold a Memorial Day prayer service in its cemetery to remember and honor all veterans who gave their lives serving the country and protecting its residents’ freedom.
Memorial Day was designated on May 5, 1868, as a day “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion [the Civil War], and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land,” Gen. John Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic ordered.
Children at the church will be encouraged to participate in this tradition by placing flowers on each of the veterans’ graves (identified with an American Flag) in the Shenkel Cemetery.
