State’s Summer Meals Program Under Way In Pottstown

HARRISBURG PA – Thirteen locations in Pottstown, three in Lower Pottsgrove Township, and seven in Phoenixville will provide free breakfast, mid-day snacks, lunch or supper this summer – and at some places, a combination – to qualified and registered children age 18 and younger, the state Department of Education reported last Monday (June 11, 2012).

State's Summer Meals Program Under Way In TownshipLocal sites for the state’s Summer Food Service Program are among more than 2,000 participating in the program across Pennsylvania, the department said.

A free school lunch is the only full meal some children receive all day, so the end of the school year may put them at risk of hunger. The U.S. Department of Agriculture created the program to ensure children have access to nutritious meals during the summer break. Non-profit site sponsors provide the facility and free meals for local children and then apply for partial reimbursement from the USDA, based on the number of meals served.

Families interested in qualifying for the program should call the National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY for assistance information.

Pennsylvania administers the programs by approving sponsors, processing reimbursement claims and providing oversight. Last summer, more than 5 million meals and snacks were served to children from low-income families.
