Bridge Work May Slow Some SEPTA Riders From Pottstown

Making a run on the High-Speed Line

POTTSTOWN PA – Pottstown area commuters who rely on Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) transit connections to travel from the borough and its surrounding townships into Philadelphia are being inconvenienced this week and in coming months by a partial shut-down of the Norristown High-Speed light rail line, the transportation agency reports.

The line was scheduled to be shut down Monday (July 8, 2013) to allow contractors to replace a beam on a bridge, called the Bridgeport Viaduct, that carries the train across the Schuylkill River to and from SEPTA’s Norristown Transportation Center. The beam is more than 30 years old; the bridge itself, built in 1911, needs reconstruction, the agency said.

The high-speed line runs from Norristown southeast to Center City at its 69th Street station and back, making up to 22 stops per run. Travelers at 69th Street then take subway lines downtown. Riders among two distinct groups of Pottstown travelers use the line; some take SEPTA Bus 93 from the borough to Norristown to board the train; others drive there by car, and park at the center’s lots.

While the work is in progress on weekdays through November (2013), one or two shuttle buses — depending on traffic loads – will operate between the center and a temporary station on Merion Street in Bridgeport. On weekends the Merion Street station will be closed, and a shuttle will run from Gulph Mills to Norristown, according to the report.
