Lower Pottsgrove Power Provider Shutting Coal Plants

Lower Pottsgrove Power Provider Shutting Coal PlantsAKRON OH – Two coal-fired power plants that generate electricity in Pennsylvania for FirstEnergy Corp., whose Metropolitan Edison division serves customers in Lower Pottsgrove Township PA, will be shut down in October (2013) because they are becoming too expensive to operate, the company reported Tuesday (July 9, 2013).

FirstEnergy, headquartered in Akron, said it expects to deactivate its Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station in Masontown PA, and Mitchell Power Station in Courtney PA, by Oct. 9. “The cost of compliance with current and future environmental regulations” and a “continued low market price for electricity” were factors in its decision, it added.

The two plants combined account for about 10 percent of the company’s total generating capacity. About 380 employees will be affected, it said.
