Shopping Center Dollar Store Hit By Armed Robber
POTTSTOWN PA – A 6-foot-tall black male, wearing an all-black face mask, black full-body robe and black gloves, brandished what was described as a semi-automatic handgun Wednesday night (Oct. 29, 2014) just before 7:30 p.m. in an armed robbery of the Dollar General Store at the North End Shopping Center, 1300 N. Charlotte St., Lower Pottsgrove police reported.
Several employees and customers were in the store when the incident occurred, but no one was injured, police added. Their press release on the crime, issued at about 9:30 p.m., did not describe how much cash or what other items, if any, were taken.
The robber got away. He was last seen running west from the store, through the shopping center parking lot toward the Burger King restaurant across North Charlotte Street, according to the release.
Several police departments – from Pottstown and its K-9 officers, North Coventry, Upper Pottsgrove, New Hanover and Limerick – arrived to assist Lower Pottsgove and to search the area after the robbery. Limerick detectives had a specific interest in the case; they judged it similar to a robbery that occurred only three days earlier, on Sunday (Oct. 26) at the Dollar Tree store on West Ridge Pike. It, too, is still under investigation.
The event was captured on video by the store’s surveillance system, and investigators Det. Joe Campbell and Ofc. Matt Meitzler distributed still photos (above) to the media in hopes the public might identify the suspect. “The North End Shopping Center is a very busy location, and police are asking for anyone who witnessed anything during this time” to call the department at 610-326-1508, they said.
In one photo, time-stamped at 7:22 p.m., the suspect appears to be walking into the store through its entrance door, with most of his body covered by the robe that police described as a “thawb” or “thobe.” The roughly ankle-length garment is said to be commonly worn in Persian Gulf countries. Beneath it, police noted, the suspect wore blue jeans and light-colored sneakers or canvas shoes.
In the second photo, time-stamped at 7:23, the suspect is seen leaving the store through an adjacent exit door with what appears to be a white plastic bag carried in his left hand. The handgun is not clearly visible in either photo, although witnesses told police it too was black in color.
