20140708-Latest-PoliceBadgeSANATOGA PA – A 64-year-old Pottstown man was cited Friday afternoon (Nov. 7, 2014) for a summary offense of retail theft, then was arrested and jailed to await extradition on an outstanding warrant in Philadelphia, Lower Pottsgrove police reported in a press release.

Richard Smith Jr., of the 400 block of Beech Street, allegedly was seen eating various food items including fruits and small cakes as he shopped at 3:25 p.m. in Redner’s Warehouse Market on North Charlotte St., Ofc. Kevin Black said.

Smith also is alleged to have “concealed drink packets in his pockets before paying for the items in his cart,” Black said in the release. At the time the officer arrived at Redner’s, he added, Smith was “cooperating” with the supermarket’s loss prevention employee.

During a records check, according to Black, Smith was determined to be the subject of a Philadelphia warrant. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville PA, where he is being held on pending the outstanding charges.
