Pottstown Man Faces DUI Charges Following Accident

SANATOGA PA – Charges have been filed against a 67-year-old Pottstown man by Lower Pottsgrove police, who allege he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of a minor vehicle accident that occurred Oct. 29 (Wednesday) at 11:50 a.m. in the parking lot of the North End Shopping Center, North Charlotte Street.

Richard Spry, a resident of East Fourth Street, Pottstown, is expected to attend a hearing soon in the Sanatoga courtroom of Magisterial District Justice Edward Kropp Sr., according to Ofc. Kevin Black. Charges were delayed as police awaited results of a blood alcohol test taken at the time of the incident, Black said Monday (Nov. 17, 2014) in a department press release.

Police were dispatched to the shopping center parking lot to investigate what was described as a “suspicious vehicle” involved in the accident. Several witnesses reported seeing a gray Dodge Durango strike a parked vehicle two separate times while the Durango’s driver attempted to park. During the course of his investigation, Black said he detected “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the driver, Spry.

Spry was “uncooperative” during administration of a field sobriety test, Black reported, and the officer took Spry into custody for suspicion of DUI. Spry later consented to the blood test to determine his blood alcohol concentration.

The recently received results indicated Spry’s blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit, Black said.
