RadioShack, which operates local stores, filed for bankruptcy

NEW YORK NY – RadioShack Corp., the electronics retailer that operates stores in Pottstown, Royersford and Phoenixville, said Thursday (Feb. 5, 2015) it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from its creditors and planned to close up to 2,400 locations nationwide.

The fate of the local stores – in the Pottstown Center shopping plaza near Wal-Mart on Shoemaker Road in Pottstown; in the Providence Court plaza near Barrister’s Bagels on East Ridge Pike in Royersford; and in the Phoenixville Towne Center plaza near Giant on Nutt Road in Phoenixville – is as yet unknown.

The company was considered an innovator in its early days. It introduced the first mass-market personal computer, and once was a consumers’ go-to stop for home electronics needs, The Associated Press reported. It struggled as shoppers increasingly bought goods online and growth in its wireless business slowed.

A possible bankruptcy in September was delayed by rescue financing.
