Police Arrest Pottstown Couple In Shooting
NORRISTOWN PA – A 32-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both Pottstown residents, were arrested Thursday (Sept. 8, 2016) for their alleged involvement in a robbery and shooting that occurred during late August outside the China Bar on West High Street in West Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announced.
Steele was joined Friday (Sept. 9) by township Police Chief Mathew Stofflet and borough Chief F. Richard Drumheller to report the apprehension of Darrell Johnson and Latia Lofton on multiple charges that include felony robbery and aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, theft, and other offenses. They were arraigned Friday morning before Magisterial District Judge Scott Palladino, who set bail at $500,000 for Johnson and $250,000 for Lofton.
Both defendants were unable to make bail, and were transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville.
When West Pottsgrove Police responded Aug. 20 at 11:38 p.m., they found a 48-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds to his back and foot after having been robbed. Lofton had been outside of the bar with the victim when Johnson approached them and demanded money and car keys. Shots were fired by both the victim and Johnson, injuring the victim.
Initially, Lofton purported to be a second victim of the robbery. However, a joint investigation by the county Detectives Violent Crimes Unit, West Pottsgrove and borough police allegedly revealed Johnson and Lofton had conspired to commit the robbery.
A preliminary hearing before Palladino is scheduled for Oct. 4. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Benjamin McKenna.
