POTTSTOWN PA – The TriCounty Active Adult Center will mark the opening of its new building at 288 Moser Rd. with a public open house next Saturday (April 1, 2017) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Executive Director Brian Parkes said. The center, former home to the Pottstown Health Club, was renovated after eight years of planning, fundraising and construction so local older adults can stay active, healthy, and live independently, he added.
Before occupying the Moser Road space the organization formerly known as the Pottstown Area Seniors’ Center rented quarters from the Pottstown YMCA, and later at Berean Bible Church in Sanatoga.
“The outpouring of support from the community and our members has been remarkable,” according to Parkes. “I think it really speaks to the importance of the center to older adults, and to the larger community.” The center’s capital campaign raised $1.6 million, and the remainder of the $2 million price tag was financed. “We had a few major donors, and a large number of people who dug deep to give what they could, and it all added up,” Parkes said.
The center has big plans to expand programming, he noted. Although it currently offers about 40 daytime programs weekly, new evening programs also are planned. “There are a lot of older adults who still work,” Sue McIntyre, assistant executive director and program manager, explained. “We want to give seniors a chance to participate in healthy and educational programs at a time that is convenient for them.”
The new facility has more than 16,000 square feet of programming and office space, where it expects to receive more than 200 older adults each weekday. It serves a membership of 2,500 adults age 50 and older with programs and services including information and referral assistance, a daily lunch, exercise programs, and social activities.
