Winter Bidding Planned For PA 63 Bridges

NORRISTOWN PA – A construction project to replace two PA Route 63 bridges over the Unami and Perkiomen creeks is expected to attract contractors’ bids beginning in December (2017), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported Tuesday (May 30) after a press conference held by Gov. Tom Wolf in Norristown.
Labeled in PennDOT documents as Project No. 50646, the work is described in an engineer’s shorthand as “PA 63 O/Unami AND Perkiom.” On an accompanying map it is displayed in two locations (above): at the bridge over the Perkiomen Creek northwest of Long Mill Road in Upper Salford Township; and at the bridge over the Unami Creek northwest of Zepp Road near Green Lane.
Bids for the combined jobs are expected to be let on Dec. 7, according to PennDOT. There were no dates announced for when the actual work would begin.
The agency has already begun nearby projects for intersection improvements on Plank, Otts, Meyers, and Seitz roads (No. 57851); and several others in the Perkiomen Valley.
Wolf and PennDOT officials were in Norristown to declare the opening of the agency’s 2017 construction season, with more than $550 million in total highway and bridge improvements that would begin or be bid across the Philadelphia region. The added amount raises the value of the region’s total contract work this year to roughly 125 projects worth $2.2 billion, the agency said in a press release.
“The funding allocated for these projects not only reduces the backlog of Pennsylvania’s pavement and bridge demands, but significantly improves the growing need for better mobility and safety on our roadways,” according to Wolf.
