Pottstown Juniors Win Scholarship Adventure
HIGH SCHOOL INNOVATORS WIN SCHOLARSHIP – Two Pottstown High School juniors, Asgar Ali and Shane Ducan, have been awarded a Dow “We Are Innovators” Challenge Scholarship to travel to Ecuador with a team of engineers and other winning students from across the U.S. and Canada to help villages there build clean water systems, schools, and sustainable energy sources, the Pottstown School District reported. Their coming 10-day service trip will be spent in the Amazon jungle, east of Tena and along the Napo River. The pair, guided by engineering class instructor Andy Bachman, used an engineer-and-design process to address the problem of food waste in the school cafeteria. As a result, they developed and built a “kid-friendly, safe, and easy fruit slicer,” documenting their work in a 25-page essay and a 16 minute YouTube video. Bachman will join Ali and Ducan on the trip.
