Highway Heat Buckle Creates Trouble On U.S. 422
HIGH TEMPERATURE CAUSES 422 BUCKLE – A portion of the passing lane on eastbound U.S. Route 422, east of Oaks PA and approaching its South Trooper Road exit, was restricted Monday morning (July 2, 2018) and slowed traffic to a crawl as drivers discovered and then tried to maneuver around a 2- to 3-inch deep, and substantially wide, crack across the width of the highway. Temperatures that in recent days soared into the high-90s, coupled with vehicle wear, caused the roadway there to buckle and crumble. Drivers initially tried pulling left or right to the road shoulders to get around the obstruction and avoid damaging their tires. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews then arrived, cordoned off the affected road, and directed all traffic onto the right shoulder as they worked to clean out and repair the buckled area.
